How to begin writing a novel |
 |
 |
| |
Creative writing, it can be said, is about harnessing
your imagination and dedicating it to proper structure
and form. So in essence a channelled creativity. In
order to obtain a good structure for your ideas you
will first have to know the ‘rules’ of novel
writing and have an understanding of points to follow
for plot, creating scenes, creating characters and creating
a flowing narrative.
There are various ways in which you can learn these
concepts or ‘rules’ and understand how to
apply them to the book you want to write. We created
NewNovelist novel writing software to save you the time
and effort required to accomplish this. We designed
it such that the form and structure are given to you,
so that you can devote your energies to the creative
process.
We provide you with a number of tools to help you develop
characters and places – the essential building
blocks for any and all successful novels.
Of course, you can still learn the theory, or build
on the basic skills that we help you achieve. We use
many examples throughout NewNovelist, to illustrate
the learning points. We encourage you to read broadly
– and to spot the common themes and structures
that become quickly evident when you know what to look
for. Why are certain novels so popular? Do they follow
the ‘rules’ you have learnt with the tuition
system?
The third step in how
to begin writing a novel is actually
doing it. This often sounds easier than it is! Although
NewNovelist removes the nightmare of the “blank
sheet of paper”, it doesn’t remove from
your responsibilities for work, children, housework,
partners, fitness……………You
may need to make a few sacrifices if you are to allocate
the time that novel writing requires!
The way you define yourself as a writer is
that you write every time you have a free minute. If
you didn't behave that way you would never do anything.
John Irving (1942 - )

Information about NewNovelist:
|
|
Creative writing and learning how to write a novel can
be exceptionally hard. First, you have to learn the
basics, then you have to practice….and practice…and
practice. And you also have to research what makes a
successful novel. The vast majority of novels adopt
a basic formula, and we incorporate these within NewNovelist.
Whilst throughout these additional information pages
we have provided tips and “how-to” advice,
the real gold dust is in our software program (available
on CD or to download). It is based on tuition from the
leading university Creative Writing course in England
(University of East Anglia), and uses templates to provide
you with the structure you might otherwise spend years
researching. These templates can teach you the basics
to writing all different types of novel: crime, mystery,
detective, fantasy, childrens, thrillers, military and
many many more. In short, it provides you with a virtual
tutor.
In addition to the template structure, there is context
sensitive help available – advising you on timing,
tone and beat – and scores of examples drawn from
modern and classical literature. For beginners this
will be a revelation. For more experienced writers it
provides a welcome refresher.
Whatever your standard of writing, and whatever your
motivation, if you want an all-in-one writing course,
advice, tutor, editor and note taker you should buy
